Housing Economics PDF
By:Geoffrey Meen,Kenneth Gibb,Chris Leishman,Christian Nygaard
Published on 2016-04-29 by Springer

The world has still to emerge fully from the housing-triggered Global Financial Crisis, but housing crises are not new. The history of housing shows long-run social progress, littered with major disasters; nevertheless the progress is often forgotten, whilst the difficulties hit the headlines. Housing Economics provides a long-term economic perspective on macro and urban housing issues, from the Victorian era onwards. A historical perspective sheds light on modern problems and the constraints on what can be achieved; it concentrates on the key policy issues of housing supply, affordability, tenure, the distribution of migrant communities, mortgage markets and household mobility. Local case studies are interwoven with city-wide aggregate analysis. Three sets of issues are addressed: the underlying reasons for the initial establishment of residential neighbourhoods, the processes that generate growth, decline and patterns of integration/segregation, and the impact of historical development on current problems and the implications for policy.

Immigration in New York PDF
By:Elizabeth Bogen
Published on 1987 by Praeger Publishers

In this comprehensive and lively study (the second trait a most welcome change from most demographic analyses), Bogen, Director of the Office of Immigrant Affairs, provides a summary of the legislative history of immigration to the city and extensive quantitative data on the new arrivals. She also discusses the character and quality of human and legal services for immigrants and refugees, reviews monetary and social costs and benefits, sets forth a series of recommendations for social policy, and ends with a thoughtful Paean to the Lady, the one with the lamp held high beside the Golden Door. In addition to its general contents, Bogen's book includes a most useful glossary of terms and acronyms so that readers, too, may know what it means to adjust one's status, understand the oxymoron called conditional permanent residence, take courses in ESL, and look to a volag for assistance. |Choice| This insightful volume is a comprehensive discussion of immigration patterns in New York City today. Providing the reader with a history of immigration, the book examines the composition of the city's immigrant population and the various public and private social agencies that affect it, such as the city's health and education agencies, the refugee resettlement network, the Catholic Church, and the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. The book challenges the popular but contradictory notion that immigrants cause unemployment for native-born Americans by accepting work at lower wages, while they raise taxes by living on welfare.

Scorpions for Breakfast PDF
By:Jan Brewer
Published on 2011-11-01 by Harper Collins

In Scorpions for Breakfast, Jan Brewer, America’s toughest governor and one of the most popular conservative political figures in the nation today, proudly defends her embattled state of Arizona and challenges President Obama to do his job and keep our border safe. Unfairly tarred by liberal critics as a state comprised of racist rednecks, Arizona is on the front lines in the battle against illegal immigration—and the courageous stand of its leader, a national hero who’s been called so tough that she “eats scorpions for breakfast,” will educate and inspire Americans from coast to coast.

Guarding the Golden Door PDF
By:Roger Daniels
Published on 2005-01-12 by Macmillan

The federal government's efforts to pick and choose among the multitude of immigrants seeking to enter the United States began with the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Conceived in ignorance and falsely presented to the public, it had undreamt of consequences, and this pattern has been rarely deviated from since. As renowned historian Roger Daniels shows in this brilliant new work, America's inconsistent, often illogical, and always cumbersome immigration policy has profoundly affected our recent past.

This Is Me PDF
By:Jamie Lee Curtis
Published on 2016-09-20 by Workman Publishing

From the #1 New York Times bestselling creative team of Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell comes a timely picture book about immigration. Raising important identity issues like “Where did we come from?” and “Who are we?” This Is Me is as delightful as it is important, sure to stimulate dinner table conversation. In This Is Me a teacher tells her class about her great-grandmother’s dislocating journey from home to a new country with nothing but a small suitcase to bring along. And she asks: What would you pack? What are the things you love best? What says “This is me!” With its lively, rhyming language and endearing illustrations, it’s a book to read again and again, imagining the lives of the different characters, finding new details in the art, thinking about what it would be like to move someplace completely different.

Immigration and the Legacy of Harry S. Truman PDF
By:Roger Daniels
Published on 2010 by Truman State Univ Press

These essays show President Harry S Truman made considerable contributions as an |immigration president|, though he generally has not been given credit for immigration policy. Truman pioneered refugee admissions, was the first president to propose eliminating all racial/ethnic bars in immigration, and his commission on immigration set out reforms which became central to the epochal Immigration Act of 1965.

Strangers No More PDF
By:Richard Alba,Nancy Foner
Published on 2015-04-27 by Princeton University Press

Strangers No More is the first book to compare immigrant integration across key Western countries. Focusing on low-status newcomers and their children, it examines how they are making their way in four critical European countries—France, Germany, Great Britain, and the Netherlands—and, across the Atlantic, in the United States and Canada. This systematic, data-rich comparison reveals their progress and the barriers they face in an array of institutions—from labor markets and neighborhoods to educational and political systems—and considers the controversial questions of religion, race, identity, and intermarriage. Richard Alba and Nancy Foner shed new light on questions at the heart of concerns about immigration. They analyze why immigrant religion is a more significant divide in Western Europe than in the United States, where race is a more severe obstacle. They look at why, despite fears in Europe about the rise of immigrant ghettoes, residential segregation is much less of a problem for immigrant minorities there than in the United States. They explore why everywhere, growing economic inequality and the proliferation of precarious, low-wage jobs pose dilemmas for the second generation. They also evaluate perspectives often proposed to explain the success of immigrant integration in certain countries, including nationally specific models, the political economy, and the histories of Canada and the United States as settler societies. Strangers No More delves into issues of pivotal importance for the present and future of Western societies, where immigrants and their children form ever-larger shares of the population.
